Mouma Das becomes national champ, for fifth time

Second seed Mouma Das clinched the women’s title by beating the fourth seed Poulomi Ghatak 4-2 (7-11, 8-11, 11-3, 14-12, 11-7, 11-6) in the 76th Senior Nationals Table Tennis Championships at Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Puducherry between 3 to 4 PM on Saturday. Mouma has become the national champ for the fifth time. Last time she won the title was in Ajmeer in 2006.

“A long wait has come to an end. I am determined to win the title to represent the country in more international championships. I thank Peter Eagle (former Indian coach) and Abhijit Roy (her personal coach),” Mouma said after the match.

It was a harakiri-kind-of thing for the seven time national champion Poulomi Ghatak, who has energy swings in the tournament. Though she was up 2-0, Poulomi failed to keep up the momentum and lost her focus completely giving a clear scope for her opponent to dominate and take away the most sought-after title. “After losing the first two matches, I just kept the ball on the table,” said Mouma. True, Poulomi completed the formality for her thereafter.
